Our Story
From grassroots movement to recognized force for youth development across Nigeria
How it all began
In 2020, as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of passionate young activists in Igando New-Town, Alimosho LGA, Lagos State, saw an opportunity to make a difference. They witnessed firsthand how the pandemic disproportionately affected young people—disrupting education, limiting opportunities, and exacerbating existing challenges around health, mental well-being, and economic security.
Rather than wait for change to come, these young leaders decided to create it themselves. In 2021, Teens Smart Builder Initiative (TESMI Nigeria) was officially born—a youth-led, community-driven organization dedicated to empowering adolescents and young people through comprehensive programs addressing their most pressing needs.
What started as informal community gatherings quickly grew into structured programs covering sexual and reproductive health, mental health awareness, environmental education, gender equality, and vocational skills training. Today, TESMI is a registered NGO (Registration Number: 8217610) that has reached over 3,000 young people across Lagos and Ogun States.
Our journey is a testament to the power of youth leadership and community collaboration. We remain committed to our grassroots origins while scaling our impact to reach even more young people who deserve access to knowledge, skills, and opportunities.
